We often get asked what is the difference between Wordpress and Joomla. So we thought we would jot down our thoughts on the difference between the two and share some of the links we have found useful in the past.
The fundamental difference between the two, is Wordpress is blog focused and Joomla is website focused and although Wordpress is being used for websites, the modules that are written for a Wordpress site differ from a full blown CMS Joomla site, this continues right down to the administration panel. For the more technical minded out there smashing magazine has written a really good article detailing the difference in the coding and modules. You can find that article here: http://bit.ly/L6BDXP
For the not so technical minded you can stay here with us.
Think of one as a publishing site (Wordpress) and the other as a CMS website (Joomla). Although both have overlapping functionality, Joomla is great for community driven portals and allows for greater flexibility to the modules and themes than Wordpress allows. Wordpress on the other hand is perfect for those personal website and the obvious blog related sites. There is an abundance of themes available for both Joomla and Wordpress, however Wordpress is a little less complicated and technically challenging than Joomla, the knock on effect to this is that Joomla offers larger flexibility than Wordpress especially when looking at external communication input - like comments or forums for example.
When it comes down to choosing which to go with, you need to ask yourself “what do I want out of my site and how technically savvy am I?”. To help with this decision we found an overview of Joomla and Wordpress in non technical terms, covering everything http://www.wordpressvsjoomla.com. Hope this helps and remember Bluntt specialises in CMS so if you need help just give us a shout. www.bluntt.co.za
